Today, the U.S. House of Representatives adjourned until September 4. Unfortunately, Republicans in Congress left a lot of things undone before packing their bags and heading home for the five-week district work period.

This week, I had the privilege of joining young leaders from Stoneman Douglas High School for a gun violence prevention forum where students shared their personal experiences and thoughts on various policy proposals.

Congress must take bold, comprehensive action to address gun violence, like the sweeping legislation I was proud to introduce that prohibits the sale, transfer, production, and importation of military-style assault weapons.

Today, Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee, on which I am proud to serve, released a misleading, classified memo in an attempt to discredit the FBI and undermine the ongoing investigations into Russian interference in our elections.

Today, as we reflect upon the progress made by Dr. King, we must also recognize the injustice that remains a formidable force in the United States – in our schools, housing, employment, and beyond.

As we approach the end of 2017, I want to provide you with an update on the efforts I am taking to address an issue that I know you care deeply about: Combatting the gun violence epidemic that has afflicted our nation.

Before Congress left town for the Thanksgiving holiday, House Republicans spent their last voting day passing a tax bill that provides a massive giveaway to the top 1 percent on the backs of middle-class families.

In advance of tomorrow’s holiday, I want to take this time to thank our heroic veterans for their courage and commitment, which have helped preserve the ideals of democracy, liberty, opportunity, and justice for all, upon which our great country was built.
