Dear Friend,
Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you and your family enjoy a happy, healthy, and safe holiday today.
The holiday season always makes me reflect on what I am most grateful for. This year, like in years past, I am grateful for everyone in Illinois' Fifth District who helps make our community the unique, thriving place that it is. It is an honor to represent you in Congress and I am continually appreciative of the care that you show in reaching out to share your experiences with me.
In all my years as a member of the Appropriations Committee, never before have I witnessed such blatant attacks on the LGBTQI+ community. Over the past year, I’ve sat through bill markups where my colleagues across the aisle have demonized these individuals simply for who they love or how they identify. MAGA Republicans have put dangerous policy riders in our funding bills – using LGBTQI+ individuals as pawns in their political games. It’s unsettling at best, dangerous at worst.
