The U.S. House of Representatives this week passed H.R. 7608 – the fiscal year 2021 State-Foreign Operations, Agriculture, Interior-Environment, and Military Construction-VA appropriations bills – which included initiatives championed by Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05). U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) successfully championed an amendment in the Fiscal Year 2021 National Defense Authorization Act to provide service members with masks during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The provision, offered by Representative Xochitl Torres Small (NM-02) and co-led by Quigley, instructs the Secretary of Defense to report to Congress how many masks are required to protect members of the armed forces and how the Department of Defense (DoD) plans to meet that need.

"John Lewis's life defies description. He was a son of sharecroppers who grew to be a titan of the Civil Rights Movement and the conscience of the United States Congress. Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) released a statement after receiving a letter from the Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) that failed to adequately address concerns about their Animal Welfare Act (AWA) enforcement. In April, Quigley led a letter to the USDA expressing alarm over the agency's lax monitoring and enforcement of animal welfare standards by animal dealers and exhibitors.
Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05), a member of the House Committee on Appropriations, successfully introduced an amendment to prohibit funding for ICE's "Citizen Academy" pilot program from the Fiscal Year 2021 Homeland Security funding bill. The "Citizens Academy" is currently set to launch in Chicago this September and aims to train citizens to arrest and detain undocumented immigrants. If allowed to begin, the program would dangerously increase fear and discrimination against immigrant communities and lead to increased violence and racial profiling.

Today, an amendment based on U.S. Representative Mike Quigley's (IL-05) Bird-Safe Buildings Act passed the House of Representatives as part of H.R. 2, the Moving Forward Act. The Bird-Safe Buildings Act would require that public building constructed, acquired, or significantly altered by the General Services Administration (GSA) incorporate bird-safe building materials and design features to reduce bird collisions.
