Quigley Statement on Trump Deploying Federal Agents to Chicago

July 22, 2020

Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) released the following statement after President Trump announced plans to deploy federal agents to Chicago and other cities around the country:

"Previous administrations have provided Chicago with federal law enforcement support to get illegal guns off our streets and help curb the cycle of violence. Similar assistance from the FBI, with the cooperation of the Mayor, would be welcomed. What we cannot and will not accept is the type of intervention we have seen in Portland, where unidentifiable DHS agents have attacked and detained residents for no reason. While I hope that this deployment of federal agents is different, the Trump administration must know that community trust in them is precariously low and violations of citizens' rights in Chicago will not be tolerated. I will be working with my colleagues and Mayor Lightfoot to very closely monitor this situation and, should there be any activity like what we saw in Portland, we will take swift action to hold this administration accountable."
