Illinois Tax Filing

In light of the Disaster Proclamation issued by Governor JB Pritzker and by his direction, the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) decided to provide special tax filing and payment relief to individuals and businesses. The filing deadline for Illinois income tax returns has been extended from April 15, 2020, to July 15, 2020.

The 2019 income tax filing and payment deadlines for all taxpayers who file and pay their Illinois income taxes on April 15, 2020, was automatically extended until July 15, 2020. The fastest, most secure way to receive a refund is to file tax returns electronically and request direct deposit into a checking or savings account. Taxpayers who have already filed a return can check the status of their return by using the Where's My Refund? link located at mytax.illinois.gov. Individuals may also utilize MyTax Illinois to make payments and look up their IL-PINs, amounts of any estimated tax payments they have made, and, when necessary, amounts reported on Form 1099-G.

Illinois taxpayers can find more information at tax.illinois.gov. Questions may also be emailed to the department through REV.TA-IIT@illinois.gov for individual income tax questions and REV.TA-BIT-WIT@illinois.gov for business and withholding income tax questions.

Federal Tax Filing

At the federal level, the Treasury Department postponed the traditional April 15 federal income tax filing deadline to July 15, 2020. Last month, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) reaffirmed the July 15th deadline. If you have not filed your return – or if you have filed but have not paid the taxes you owe for 2019 – the deadline is this Wednesday. Below, my staff and I have answered some of your most commonly asked questions on the federal filing deadline, how to apply for an extension, and how to pay your taxes. For additional questions, IRS tax help is available 24 hours a day on IRS.gov.
