Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05), Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government (FSGG), spoke in defense of abortion access for the women of the District of Columbia during the Appropriations Committee markup of the FY23 FSGG bill. Republican legislators introduced an amendment to prevent the District of Columbia from using their own funds for abortion and block FEHB coverage for abortion services.

U.S. Representative Mike Quigley, a member of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus, released the below statement on the Supreme Court's decision to strike down Roe v. Wade:

"Today's decision is a shocking reversal of a half century of settled law on women's rights. At least two Supreme Court judges lied to the Senate about their intention to keep Roe in place and have now ensured that Republican legislatures across the country have control over women's bodies.

Today, U.S. Representatives Mike Quigley's (IL-05), legislation, the Big Cat Public Safety Act, passed out of the House Committee on Natural Resources. The bill would ban the private ownership of big cats and bring an end to the harmful cub petting industry, in an effort to enhance the safety of our communities, protect first responders, and safeguard these wild animals. A bipartisan Senate companion bill is being led by Senator Richard Blumenthal.

The House Appropriations Committee today released the draft fiscal year 2023 Financial Services and General Government funding bill, which will be considered in subcommittee tomorrow. The legislation provides annual funding for the Department of the Treasury, the Judiciary, the Executive Office of the President, and other independent agencies, including the Small Business Administration.

Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley, a member of the Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition, released a statement applauding the decision by the Department of the Interior to ban the use of single-use plastics on public lands. After the Trump administration reversed Obama-era guidelines that allowed the National Park Service to ban the sale of single-use plastic water bottles in parks, Quigley tirelessly advocated for the restoration of these guidelines.

This week alone we have seen shootings at a hospital in Tulsa, OK, a Walmart in Pittson, PA, and a high school in Los Angeles, CA.

Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley released the following statement after nineteen students and two adults were murdered in a mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas:

"This horror should be unimaginable but in the United States, this is the 212th mass shooting of the year. In Chicago, more than 200 people have died from gun violence so far in 2022.

"I am sick of hearing about thoughts and prayers from my Republican colleagues—the very same colleagues who claim to be ‘pro-life' then block legislation that could actually save lives. Our children deserve better."
