Choice

Put simply, women must have the right to make their own private health decisions. The overturning of the landmark decision, Roe v. Wade, is a shocking reversal of a half-century of settled law on women’s rights. Choice is not solely a “women’s issue”  — it’s a civil rights issue and an American issue. And as your representative in Washington, I will always stand up for women’s reproductive rights. While abortion remains legal in Illinois, states across the country are now enacting bans on abortion following the 2022 Supreme Court decision.

As a member of the Pro-Choice Caucus, I was proud to help pass the Women’s Health Protection Act and the Right to Contraception Act last Congress. While neither bill received a vote in the Senate, they are integral steps to protecting these fundamental rights, and I will continue to support them until they become settled law.

As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I have consistently introduced a funding bill that repeals the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits any government funding to cover abortion services. In particular, this law prevents people who receive health services through Medicaid and other federal programs from accessing fundamental reproductive health care. This Congress, I am an original cosponsor of the EACH Act in order to reverse the Hyde Amendment and related abortion access restrictions. No one should be denied reproductive care based on how they are insured.

Going forward, I will continue to do everything I can to protect access to reproductive services and safeguard women’s rights.
