Quigley Statement on Speaker Ryan’s Comments on Defunding Planned Parenthood
WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05),a member of the Pro-Choice Caucus, released the following statement following Speaker Ryan's pledge to defund Planned Parenthood as part of legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act:
"A New Year, a new Congress, but the same ideological attacks against women's health care by House Republicans. We cannot and should not start the 115th Congress with renewed partisan promises to gut comprehensive, preventative and affordable care for women. From birth control and STD testing to cervical screenings, mammograms, and counseling, Planned Parenthood is a critical resource for Chicagoans and others in communities across the country.
"As we mark the forty-fourth anniversary of Roe v. Wade later this month, it is evident that the fight to ensure women have the right to make their own health care decisions continues. I urge my colleagues across the aisle to reflect on their previous failed attempts to defund Planned Parenthood, which enjoys strong support from the majority of Americans, and instead place their trust in women across America to make the personal decisions that work best for themselves and their families."
