The House Committee on Appropriations this week approved the fiscal year 2020 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies bill, which includes several initiatives championed by Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05). As part of this legislation, the Committee approved funding requested by Quigley for HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, gun violence research, and Title X Family Planning.

Mike Quigley (IL-05) voted to pass H.R. 986, the Protecting Americans with Pre-Existing Conditions Act, to block the Trump administration's October 2018 guidance that gave states the option to weaken the Affordable Care Act's protections for Americans living with both chronic and acute medical conditions. Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley led members of the Illinois House Delegation in a letter to Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos expressing their concerns about the implementation of the Department's Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. Established in 2007, PSLF promised to forgive up to 100 percent of federal student loan debt if a recipient makes 10 years' worth of payments and works full time in a public service career.

U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) introduced legislation to award hockey legend Willie O'Ree the Congressional Gold Medal. O'Ree, who is known as the "Jackie Robinson of ice hockey," was the first black player to compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018. The Willie O'Ree Congressional Gold Medal Act is co-lead by Reps. Ayanna Pressley (MA-07), John Katko (NY-24), and Tom Emmer (MN-06).
