Discrimination has no place in our armed services, our workplaces or our country.

In a blow to congressional transparency, the House Appropriations Committee voted against publicly releasing highly informative, taxpayer-funded reports that members use to educate themselves on the issues before Congress.

For generations, this country’s transportation infrastructure served as the backbone of our economic success. We dreamed big, we built bigger, and our economy flourished. But today, our crumbling infrastructure is slowing economic growth, and without serious long-term investments, we simply will not be able to compete in today’s global economy.

Today the House of Representatives’ Appropriations Committee debated two amendments that would make Congressional Research Service reports more equitably available to the public. The effort to release the reports was led by Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL) and Rep. Scott Rigell (R-VA).

There is a Congressional Subcommittee in Washington, D.C. and it meets out of the public eye. It meets in a room beneath the Capitol. This is called the emerging threats subcommittee and it discusses trends in national security. Much of what the subcommittee discusses is secret, Congressman Mike Quigley from Chicago on the North side, sits on that committee and recently talked to WBEZ’s Tony Arnold to talk about the work and some of the country’s misplaced spending priorities when it comes to national security.
