Quigley Statement on D+ Report Card for America’s Infrastructure

March 9, 2017

WASHINGTON — Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05), a member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies (THUD), released the following statement on today's D+ rating from the American Society of Civil Engineers' Report Card for America's Infrastructure. The D+ rating remains unchanged since the last report card was issued in 2013.

"Today's rating from the American Society of Civil Engineers validates what we already knew: the condition of America's infrastructure is unacceptable. At the same time, this report highlights the importance and urgency of making long-term investments into projects that modernize, maintain, and advance our existing infrastructure systems," said Rep. Quigley. "While we must improve transportation structures that help Americans get from point A to point B safely and efficiently, our investment must go beyond roads and bridges to cover all aspects of our country's infrastructure, from the electric grid and water pipes to river locks, freight systems, and broadband access. Investing in our connected infrastructure system is the key to improving quality of life, strengthening our economic competitiveness, and securing our leadership in a changing world."

As Illinois' only member on the House Appropriations Committee, Rep. Quigley has pushed for a long-term surface transportation bill and prioritized Chicago-area infrastructure investments as a member of the Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies (THUD). He has helped secure $35 million in Core Capacity grants to benefit CTA and over $100 million for projects to ease flooding in Cook County. He also fought for increased funding for the TIGER grant program to benefit both highways and pedestrian projects. Most recently, he reached a $1 billion funding agreement for the first phase of the Red and Purple Line Modernization Program for the CTA. Rep. Quigley took to the House Floor earlier this year to encourage more funding for a comprehensive package that addresses all aspects of our connected infrastructure system.
