What a guy!
Chicago's hockey zealot-turned-congressman, North Side Democrat Mike Quigley, won his Stanley Cup bet with a Massachusetts colleague when the Blackhawks took the series. But he paid off his half of the bet, too.
Mr. Quigley collected the promised Boston-style clam chowder and a case of Harpoon beer from Boston-area U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch. "Mr. Lynch is a good sport and a man of his word," Mr. Quigley said.
But in a bit of sportsmanship " kind of the political equivalent of the two teams shaking hands after the final goal " he sent to Mr. Lynch's office Eli's cheesecake and a nice selection from Nuts on Clark near Mr. Quigley's house.
Mr. Quigley, as a statement from his office modestly puts it, "is a die-hard Chicago Blackhawks fan who began playing hockey when he was 6 years old and still plays" " and gets injured.
However, being a Chicago Democrat, Mr. Quigley does know how to stick in the shiv, too. In the statement, he says he looks forward to knocking down that chowder with some Harpoon brewskis "while watching replays of the Blackhawks' win."
One suggestion to the congressman: Don't bet on the Cubs.
