Quigley Statement on House Vote to Defund Planned Parenthood
WASHINGTON -- Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) issued the following statement after the House of Representatives voted to eliminate federal funding for Planned Parenthood.
"This vote is an ideological attack on women's health care brazenly disguised as fiscal responsibility. Planned Parenthood saves Medicaid costs, reduces abortions, and provides life-saving health care to 5 million women and men every year. A budget compromise should not come at the expense of the health and well-being of low-income women who depend on Planned Parenthood."
Planned Parenthood receives approximately $363 million annually, which accounts for one-hundredth of one percent of the federal budget. Quigley has spoken out in defense of Title X funding and Planned Parenthood repeatedly in recent weeks, as the House of representatives continues its assault on women's health care. No federal funding can be used to pay for abortions under current law.
