Celebrating World Series Champions Chicago Cubs

November 15, 2016
Speeches

WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) spoke on the House Floor to congratulate the Chicago Cubs on winning their first World Series Champion title in 108 years.

Below is a video and transcript of the speech.

Mr. Speaker, in 1908, the Cubs won their first World Series championship at West Side Park.

To give you a little perspective of how long ago that actually was, in the crowd you could find Civil War veterans.

During the Cubs’ 108 year drought, we’ve had two World Wars, put a man on the moon, and survived Y2K.

But after an historic seven-game World Series, I can finally say that my Chicago Cubs are champions once again.

I am enormously proud of this Cubs team for their sportsmanship, team spirit, dogged persistence, and unparallel determination on the long, long road to a league best regular season and a championship title.

Generations of loyal Cubs fans finally got to see their team win the World Series, in what many are calling one of the best baseball games of all time.

What an honor it was to be in the stands that night and then join thousands of Chicagoans in celebrating the long-awaited return of the World Series trophy to the friendly confines of Wrigley Field, which I am beyond proud to have in my district

The city and people of Chicago will be forever grateful to the 2016 Cubs for reminding us that nothing is impossible if you work hard and never give up.

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Go Cubs Go and I yield back.
