Quigley Visits Heritage Bicycles as Part of “Mike on the Move” & “Undercover Congressman” Initiatives

July 10, 2017

Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05), a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD), visited Heritage Bicycles, a Chicago-based small business that builds American-made custom bicycles, offers repair services, and brews their own coffee. Rep. Quigley toured the store and assisted customers with bicycle maintenance and food orders.

"Heritage Bicycles is a prime example of a local business that is spurring economic activity and strengthening our sense of community through a commitment to sustainable infrastructure," said Rep. Quigley. "Forward-thinking businesses that prioritize eco-friendly transportation and local manufacturing will help ensure Chicago remains a leader in innovative efforts to reduce congestion, minimize pollution, and advance a clean-energy economy. I appreciate the opportunity to meet with the store's owners and customers and share my passion for bikes."

"Getting to spend the morning with Rep. Quigley making coffee and working on bikes was a great experience," said Michael Salvatore, Owner & CEO of Heritage Bicycle. "He was really in-tune with the bicycle culture here in Chicago and wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty. We appreciate his work in Congress to make Chicago and other cities across the country more bike-friendly."

Rep. Quigley's "Mike on the Move" initiative emphasizes how the federal government can support transportation and infrastructure investments. Previous "Mike on the Move" events highlighted rail infrastructure needs and expansions from Chicago Union Station and Amtrak, Chicago's efforts to continue its bike-friendly initiatives through Divvy bike-sharing system, and highway transportation and clean energy needs through UPS at their headquarters in Hodgkins, IL. In January, Rep. Quigley spoke on the House Floor about the need to prioritize infrastructure spending and pass a comprehensive package that addresses all aspects of our connected infrastructure system.

Since taking office in 2009, Rep. Quigley has utilized his "Undercover Congressman" initiative to work alongside Fifth District residents in dozens of jobs to better understand the challenges constituents and local businesses face on a daily basis.
