Quigley: Trump’s Threat to Chicago is Reckless, Misguided, Gross Overreach of Federal Power

Jan 25, 2017
Press Release

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05), member of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, released the following statement after President Trump tweeted about Chicago gun violence:

“President Trump’s threat to ‘send in the Feds’ to fix the ‘carnage’ in Chicago is not only reckless and misguided, but also a gross overreach of federal power. While I agree that gun violence, both in Chicago and across this country, is a national tragedy that requires immediate and substantial action, a threat to institute martial law is not the answer. Instead, the President should work with Congress to provide our first responders with the resources they need to protect our families and keep our communities safe. Specifically, he should send Congress a budget request that restores funding for critical Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security programs that have been severely cut since Republicans gained control of the House of Representatives in 2011. This would allow local law enforcement to hire officers, bolster prosecutions, provide drug treatment, and prevent terrorist attacks. And, if President Trump is really serious about reducing violence in Chicago, he should support commonsense, pragmatic gun laws that would prevent more lives from being lost.”
