Quigley Statement on Vote Limiting President’s Authority to Attack Iran

January 9, 2020

Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05), a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, released the following statement in support of H.Con.Res. 83, a resolution limiting President Donald Trump's authority to take further military action against Iran:

"I remain deeply concerned by the President's unilateral decision to engage militarily with Iran and the administration's inability in the days since to offer the public a clear strategy moving forward in the region. The first promise I make as a member of Congress is to protect our nation. I firmly believe that engaging in an escalating series of attacks with Iran threatens our national security.

"The Constitution clearly outlines that the power to declare war rests with Congress and Congress alone. It is critical that Congress reassert this role and take decisive action to prevent the President from leading our nation into another endless war in the Middle East. Today's vote sends the clear message that the House of Representatives will not sit idly by while the President attempts to circumvent Congress's authority."
