Quigley Statement on Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s Joint Address to Congress

December 21, 2022

Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley, Co-Chair of the Congressional Ukraine Caucus, released the following statement after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered a joint address to Congress:

"I have been impressed by President Zelenskyy's unwavering leadership of his country during this incredibly difficult time. I maintain that his closest historical counterpart is Winston Churchill, leading the United Kingdom through the Blitz. That historical parallel was even sharper tonight. President Zelenskyy has remained on the ground in Kyiv during the most relentless bombings, he has visited the front lines, and comforted the victims of horrific war crimes. It has been an honor to have now met with him twice in person since the invasion and to have heard him speak tonight.

"Tonight, President Zelenskyy spoke directly to the American people outlining how his nation is fighting not just for their own freedom, but for the future of democracy everywhere. Millions have been moved by the determination in the face of the atrocities displayed by Ukrainians and that he described to us all tonight.

"I sincerely hope that all of my colleagues take his words to heart and continue to offer the United States' steadfast support for Ukraine.

"Slava Ukraini."

Quigley served as a member of the escort committee for Zelenskyy tonight, walking him onto the House floor for his remarks and spending some time speaking with Zelenskyy before the joint session began.
