Quigley Statement on Ukrainian Demonstration Violence

WASHINGTON — Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) released the following statement on the Ukrainian government's use of violence in response to demonstrators in Kyiv:

"Ukrainian leaders must respect their citizens' rights to freedom of expression and assembly, which is a bedrock principle in any developing democracy. The unnecessary use of violence to silence peaceful voices undermines the country's democratic future, and the United States should continue to stand with the Ukrainian people in their desire for economic growth and a free republic."

Rep. Quigley is a member of the Congressional Ukrainian Caucus. He has previously met with Ukrainian officials to address concerns voiced by the Ukrainian community in Illinois' 5th Congressional District and recently commemorated the 80th anniversary of the Ukrainian famine and genocide.
