Quigley Statement on TrumpCare Vote

May 4, 2017

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (D-IL), a member of the House Appropriations Committee, released the following statement on House Republicans' TrumpCare vote:

"This afternoon's vote on the House Floor can best be described with one word: shameful. Today, Republicans put politics over people by moving forward on a bill with only hours' notice and without an updated cost estimate. Unfortunately, we know the cost it will have on tens of millions of Americans who will lose health care coverage as a result. Quality, affordable care is a right for all, including for our seniors and those with pre-existing conditions who will now be forced to pay considerably higher out-of-pocket costs under this bill.

"I was proud to vote for the Affordable Care Act, which was one of my first votes in Congress. This historic, life-saving law gave people the peace of mind that comes with reliable coverage that doesn't force a choice between taking care of your well-being and putting food on the table. Prioritizing the fulfillment of campaign promises should never come at the expense of our constituents' health.

"The American people have every right to be outraged, and I appreciate every individual who has called and emailed to tell us what the ACA means to them and how weakening care will impact their lives. We have heard your concerns loud and clear, and we stand with you. In the face of this reprehensible, perilous bill, I will do everything in my power – through the appropriations process and otherwise – to protect the American people from the consequences of the misguided, selfish action taken today."
