Quigley Statement on Trump’s Ban on Transgender Service Members
Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05), who serves as Vice Chair of the LGBT Equality Caucus and founding member of the Transgender Equality Task Force, released the following statement on President Trump’s decision to ban transgender Americans from enlisting or openly serving in the military:
“When brave Americans are willing to risk their lives in defense of our freedoms and ideals, we should welcome them with open arms. To prohibit some of our most courageous and talented men and women from serving the country they love simply because of their gender identity is unpatriotic and disastrous for our national security. At a time when our military is facing a diminishing pool of interested applicants, we must embrace and thank all of those willing to serve.
“With at least 6,000 transgender active duty service members and reservists, this decision is just as alienating as it is cruel and unnecessary. Requiring transgender service members to suppress their authentic selves undermines their tremendous sacrifices and contributions. We cannot and will not stand by as the President seeks to prioritize discrimination and bigotry over the safety our nation.”
