Quigley Statement in Support of Puerto Rican Debt Compromise
WASHINGTON — Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) released the following statement in support of bipartisan H.R. 5278, Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA):
“The Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA) is far from perfect, but it represents a bipartisan compromise that allows Puerto Rico to pull itself out of the stranglehold of debt and begin the restructuring process that it desperately requires. However, this is about more than just Puerto Rico’s finances. The cost in terms of access to health care, education, clean water, public safety, and daily needs is very real and increasing every day. Only Congress can provide Puerto Rico with the tools it needs to move past its fiscal and public debt crisis that is affecting its 3.5 million American citizens, its economy, and its future. I’m pleased that Democrats and Republicans were able to work together in a bipartisan nature to help Puerto Rico and begin to bring this debt crisis to an end.”
