Quigley Statement on Steve Bannon’s Appointment to National Security Council

Jan 30, 2017
Press Release

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05), member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, released the following statement after President Trump appointed Steve Bannon to a permanent position on the National Security Council:

“The elevation of White House Chief Strategist, Steve Bannon, to a permanent position on the National Security Council (NSC) should be deeply troubling to all Americans concerned with the safety and security of our nation. White nationalist convictions fueled by an anti-globalist agenda has no place in our foreign or national security policy. As a member of the House Intelligence Committee, I know firsthand that our approach to national security issues are the matter of life and death. These tough calls must be made by experts relying on sound judgment, intelligence and experience; and we cannot allow this critical decision-making process to be muddled by efforts to push partisan or political motives. Instead of promoting members of his inner-circle, it is imperative that President Trump heed the advice of trusted key officials, such as the Director of National Intelligence and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, both of whom have been removed as permanent members of the NSC. These are individuals with specific and valued expertise on the challenges we face to keep Americans safe, and they must always have a seat at the table.”
