Quigley Statement on Special Counsel Mueller’s Press Statement

May 29, 2019

Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05), who serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, released the following statement after Special Counsel Robert Mueller delivered a press statement reiterating the findings of his investigation:

"I want to extend my sincere thanks to Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his team for their dedicated pursuit of the truth over the last two years. Their unwavering dedication has been a service to our nation.

"Today, Mr. Mueller identified two things that Congress must take action on. First, he emphasized once again that if his office had been able to absolve the President of obstruction of justice, he would have done so. Instead, he said that charging the President with a crime was not an option his office was able to consider because of Department of Justice policy, not because he believed the President did not commit crimes.

"Second, Mr. Mueller went out of his way to remind the American public that a foreign power attacked our democratic processes repeatedly during the 2016 election cycle, a fact that has concerningly become lost in the conversation surrounding the Special Counsel's findings.

"At the end of the day, what the Special Counsel is saying is that the ball is in Congress' court. I believe that the Special Counsel must appear before Congressional committees and take questions from members of Congress and that Congress must relentlessly pursue our current investigations. Congress has a responsibility to exercise every oversight option available to us, including potentially opening an impeachment inquiry."
