Quigley Statement on Senate Acquittal in Impeachment Trial
Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) released the following statement after the Senate voted to acquit former President Donald Trump on an impeachment charge of incitement:
“This acquittal is a miscarriage of justice and an affront to the Constitution. To every Senator who voted to acquit I have one question: if Donald Trump’s actions are not worthy of conviction – if inciting a mob to attack the US Capitol, to pursue the Vice President with the intention of hanging him on the Capitol lawn, and to murder a Capitol Police Officer and injure hundreds more is not worthy of conviction – then what is?
“Every Representative and Senator takes an oath of office in which they pledge to defend the Constitution against enemies both foreign and domestic. The decision to acquit Donald Trump is a betrayal of that oath and it will be remembered that way for generations to come.
“In the face of this egregious mistake, I will be thinking today of the members and staff who feared for their lives, the officers who protected us, and every American who was shaken by the January 6 attack. We can never forget what happened on that day and I look forward to our justice system pursuing charges against those Trump inspired to violence.
“While I still believe that accountability is a necessary step to healing, I remain confident that President Joe Biden will in the coming weeks and months, continue the difficult work of bringing our country back together in the face of this shameful event.”
