Quigley Statement on Resignation of Michael Flynn

Feb 14, 2017
Press Release

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05), who serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, released the following statement after Michael Flynn resigned from his role as National Security Advisor:

“News of General Flynn’s resignation as National Security Advisor, a position he was never fit to hold, comes as no surprise. His secret conversations with the Russian Ambassador were disqualifying from the start and his resignation is appropriate and welcomed. Mr. Flynn undermined our national security the minute he picked up the phone, but what is just as troubling is that this serious wrongdoing and lapse of judgment in itself did not lead to Mr. Flynn’s termination. Instead, it required him to be caught in a lie to the President, Vice President and the American people. The nature of General Flynn’s backchannel talks underscores the urgency with which we must investigate Russia’s involvement in our political system, and raises even more questions about the Trump Administration’s relationship with Vladimir Putin.

“As a member of the House Intelligence Committee, I will continue to follow the facts wherever they lead so we can address our national security vulnerabilities wherever they exist. The American people deserve to know the full scope of the Administration’s involvement with those who hacked our democracy just months ago. We need a bicameral, bipartisan, and thorough investigation now more than ever.”
