Quigley Statement on Release of Video of Fatal Police Shooting of Adam Toledo

April 19, 2021

U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) released the following statement after footage was released showing the fatal police shooting of 13-year-old Adam Toledo in Chicago, Illinois, on March 29:

"Adam Toledo should be alive today. He should still be able to go to school, he should still be able to hug his family. He should still have his whole future ahead of him. His death is a travesty and first and foremost I want to extend my support to his family and our neighbors in Little Village. I share our community's collective grief."

"No person should ever have to fear for their life during a police interaction—but sadly that is the commonality for far too many Brown and Black communities in the City of Chicago and the United States."

"Right now, our country is at a crossroads. For far too long the promise of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness has applied to some but not all, and we have failed Adam like so many other young people. This heartbreaking loss serves to remind us, yet again, how we have fallen tragically short."

"The Civilian Office of Police Accountability has committed to completing a full, thorough, and objective investigation of the entire incident. That process should move forward in a fair and expeditious manner."

"Beyond that, we must commit to full accountability, training, and regulations."
