Quigley Statement on President Biden’s Address to a Joint Session of Congress

April 28, 2021

Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley, a member of the House Appropriations Committee and Chair of the Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government, released a statement following President Joe Biden's first joint address to Congress:

"Just 99 days into President Biden's presidency, our country has come together to make incredible progress in the fight against the pandemic. President Biden and Democrats know the work isn't over yet.

"The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the weakest points in our social fabric, leaving too many families struggling. Now, as nearly half of all Americans have received their first vaccine shot and our economy begins to bounce back, we must take steps to not only get back to where we were – but to ensure no family is left behind ever again.

"Tonight, President Biden outlined an ambitious plan that will put us on that path. The American Families Plan invests in families by making childcare and education more affordable and providing economic security for hard-working Americans. This plan will lift millions of children out of poverty and put our communities back to work, and it will all be paid for through tax reform that simply asks the wealthiest Americans to pay their fair share.

"President Biden's American Families Plan is a once-in-a-generation investment in our future in response to a once-in-a-generation crisis. As Chairman of the Subcommittee that funds the IRS, I look forward to working with the President to ensure everyone is paying their fair share. I hope that Republicans will finally cease their grandstanding and come to the table so we can all work together to lift up the middle class."
