Quigley Statement on Passing of Former Secretary of State Colin Powell

October 18, 2021

Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) released the following statement on the passing of Former Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Colin Powell.

"Today, we lost a man who dedicated his life to service and to keeping our country safe. When Colin Powell was sworn in as secretary of state in 2001, he became the highest-ranking Black public official in the country. He was also the first African American chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Secretary Powell was the embodiment of civility, integrity, and dignity in office. Today, we should all follow his model as an example. His passing marks the loss of an icon and a great American public servant. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones."
