Quigley Statement on Passage of Dream and Promise Act
Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) released the following statement after House Democrats passed H.R. 6, the American Dream and Promise Act, which provides vital protections to up to 2 million immigrants who have spent much of their lives in the United States:
“The President has spent two years launching attack after attack against DACA and TPS recipients, stranding thousands of families in legal limbo and betraying the values on which our country was founded. Despite court rulings in their favor, DACA and TPS recipients, many of whom have known no other home than the United States, have lived every day with the threat of deportation.
“These immigrants came here as young people in search of the values and ideals our nation was founded upon – life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Like all people living in this great country, DREAMers are striving to obtain their own American dream.
“Today, House Democrats have finally passed legislation to end their uncertainty and provide DREAMers with a pathway to citizenship and TPS recipients with a pathway to legal permanent residency. DREAMers and TPS recipients have made the United States their home for decades. They are teachers, first responders, entrepreneurs and vital parts of what make our communities strong.
“I was proud to cast my vote today on behalf of every DACA and TPS recipient, who are already Americans in every way but one.”
