Quigley Statement on White House’s Clean Water Initiatives

April 27, 2011

CHICAGO -- Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) issued the following statement after the Obama Administration announced a comprehensive new strategy to protect America's waters.

"I applaud the Administration's proposed guidance that would restore and protect our nation's vulnerable wetlands, streams, lakes and headwaters in both a transparent and environmentally conscious way. After all, conservation, first and foremost, is the key to ensuring that the great land, air and water we have known for our lifetime exists for our children and their children."

The administration's framework outlines a series of actions across federal agencies to ensure the integrity of the waters Americans rely on every day for drinking, swimming, and fishing, and that support farming, recreation, tourism and economic growth. It includes draft federal guidance to clarify which waters are protected by the Clean Water Act nationwide; innovative partnerships and programs to improve water quality and water efficiency; and initiatives to revitalize communities and economies by restoring rivers and critical watersheds. Quigley is an original cosponsor of the Clean Water Act in Congress.
