Quigley Statement on Supreme Court Hobby Lobby Decision
Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) released the following statement on the Supreme Court's decision in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby to exempt closely held companies from providing contraception coverage to their employees:
"I am extremely disappointed that the Supreme Court is allowing for-profit companies to use their religious beliefs to interfere with the personal health decisions of their employees and discriminate against women seeking practical medical care.
"As an attorney and former member of the House Judiciary Committee, I believe true religious freedom under the Constitution means protecting the faiths and beliefs of all Americans, no matter who they may work for, and I have grave concerns about the precedent this sets for future.
"Contraception is a basic element of health care used by more than 90 percent of women throughout their lifetime, and I will continue fighting to ensure they have access to the full range of comprehensive health care options they deserve."
Rep. Quigley is a staunch advocate for comprehensive reproductive health care and has previously written in support of requiring employers to cover contraception in basic benefits packages. He is an ardent supporter of a woman's right to choose and a member of the Pro-Choice Caucus, speaking out against efforts to ban abortions after 20 weeks and legislation that would make it harder for victims of rape and incest to receive abortion care.
