Quigley Statement on State of the Union Address

January 28, 2014

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) released the following statement in response to President Obama’s State of the Union address:

“President Obama was very clear in his vision of ‘opportunity for all’ and I agree: your ability to get ahead should be determined by nothing more than your hard work, ambition and goals. But opportunity requires action. Congress must find common ground and finally take up meaningful legislation that will create jobs, grow our economy and strengthen the middle class.

“Our actions must start with smart investments in infrastructure, education and research and continue with a reasonable federal minimum wage increase. Also, we must strengthen our workforce with the fundamental resources needed to get ahead: 21st century skills and access to a 21st century education.

“All this must happen along with renewed efforts to pass immigration reform, address climate change and ensure equality for every American. As a member of Congress, I recognize our work is cut out for us, and I look forward to working across the aisle to get things done.”
