Quigley Statement on Federal District Court’s Ruling that DOMA is Unconstitutional

July 8, 2010

CHICAGO -- Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (D-IL) issued the following statement after a Federal District Court found parts of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) unconstitutional.

"I applaud the decisions of the Federal District Court," said Quigley. "I agree that the Defense of Marriage Act is an unconstitutional intrusion into state and individual rights, and I will continue to push for its repeal. These decisions affirm Lincoln's statement at Gettysburg that this nation is always moving towards freedom and equality for all."

DOMA defines marriage as exclusively between a man and a woman. Quigley spoke out against the law last year asking, "What, I would ask, is a more intimate, more important, more critical, and a more sacred decision than who we love and how we express that love?"
