Quigley Statement on Announced Stoning of Iranian Woman
Today, Congressman Quigley issued the following statement after the Iranian government announced that Sakineh Ashtiani would be stoned to death for allegedly committing adultery.
"The Iranian justice system on display is worse than archaic. When a woman's testimony is worth half of a man's, we have inequality at its most fundamental level; when it results in death by stoning, we see human rights violations that set the order of law back not decades, but centuries. The international community and the United States must do all we can to save Sakineh Ashtiani's life. She is not the first woman to be victimized by Iran's overtly sexist brand of justice but with enough international outrage, condemnation, and pressure, perhaps she can be the last."
