Quigley Statement on McCarthy’s Unfounded Impeachment Announcement
Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05), a member of the first Donald Trump impeachment panel, released a statement following Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s announcement of his intention to launch an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden on allegations founded in conspiracy theories:
“Today, Speaker McCarthy once again caved to the demands of his most extreme members.
“The truth is that MAGA extremists have wanted to impeach Joe Biden since before he took office. To cite the Senate GOP – they don’t have any evidence against the President. What they do have is leverage over a weak Speaker – one who is more concerned with protecting his gavel than serving his country.
“McCarthy hasn’t had the votes to pass anything meaningful this Congress, including the votes to open this impeachment inquiry, let alone actually impeach the President. With this step, Republicans have delegitimized the impeachment process to be nothing more than political payback.
“This is a sham and we should treat it as one.”
