Quigley Statement on LGBTQ Pride Month
U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05), who serves as Vice Chair of the LGBT Equality Caucus and a founding Member of the Transgender Equality Task Force, released the following statement in recognition of LGBTQ Pride Month, which is celebrated throughout June:
“During the month of June, we celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and recognize the incredible strides it has made to achieve equal rights. This Pride Month is especially significant as it marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, the birth of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. Since this pivotal moment in the fight for equality, we have seen the end of ‘don’t ask don’t tell’, the SCOTUS ruling in favor of marriage equality, the granting of full access to medical care within the ACA, and, just last month, the House passage of the Equality Act. All of us owe a debt of thanks to the leaders, both past and present, of the LGBTQ+ rights movement who helped make those accomplishments possible.
“Despite all of this progress, we must realize that we cannot rest on our accomplishments. We must fight against dangerous and misguided attempts to roll back basic rights for our LGBTQ+ families, employees, and troops, especially our Trans community members. I am committed to my role as an ally and I will not rest until everyone – regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity – is met with true equality.”
