Quigley Statement on Landmark Bill to Admit D.C. as the 51st State
Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) released the following statement after House Democrats voted to pass H.R. 51, the Washington DC Admission Act, which seeks to grant statehood to the District of Columbia:
“For too long, residents of our nation’s Capital have been subject to ‘taxation without representation.’ It is a foundational principle of the United States that all voices deserve to be heard equally, no matter what language they speak, the religion they practice, or where they live. This right has been denied to DC residents for far too long, and it is past time they had the opportunity to enjoy full participation in our democracy. Today’s vote is a vital step towards political equality for all Americans and a historic moment not only for the residents of Washington D.C. but for our entire nation.
“I was proud to vote in favor of HR 51 in the House today and I hope the Senate quickly follows suit, and grants statehood to the residents of the District of Columbia.”
