Quigley Statement on House Speaker Vote

October 25, 2023

Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05), released the following statement on Representative Mike Johnson (LA-02) being voted as Speaker of the House:

“Today, House Republicans elected one of their most extreme members as Speaker of the House. Representative Mike Johnson played a leading role in trying to overturn the 2020 election results. He celebrated the end of reproductive rights when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. He has introduced harmful anti-LGBTQ legislation.

“Johnson was not Republicans’ first choice, second, third, or even fourth choice. Over the past 21 days, Republicans have created total dysfunction in Congress while they tried to elect a partisan Speaker. Representative Johnson was the last resort to satisfy their extremist wing and placate former President Trump.

“But as Leader Jeffries has said, Democrats stand ready to reach across the aisle and address our highest priorities – funding the government, aiding our allies abroad and tackling the current immigration crisis. I hope Republicans and our new Speaker are willing to see the urgent needs before us and work together on a bipartisan basis.”
