Quigley Statement on House Passage of Additional COVID Relief Bill

October 1, 2020

Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed a COVID-19 relief bill, the updated Heroes Act, which would provide Americans with an additional round of stimulus checks, extend the highly successful Payroll Support Program to keep airline industry workers paid, and make good on House Democrats' promise to compromise with Republicans.

"Four months ago, House Democrats passed the first Heroes Act to support struggling American families, rescue small businesses, and help prevent catastrophic layoffs. In the time since, Senate Republicans have failed repeatedly to present a viable compromise and circumstances for families have only gotten worse.

"Despite the political bickering, I have remained determined to continue negotiations with Republicans and offer compromise options. Too many livelihoods are on the line and abandoning the American people is simply not an option. The updated legislation passed today is our effort to ensure negotiations continue.

"In addition to aiding state and local governments and supporting efforts to track and fight the coronavirus, the updated Heroes Act will, critically, keep airline industry workers paid. Without Congressional action, thousands of airline workers in Chicago and across the country are facing layoffs and furloughs. I'm proud to have voted in favor of legislation to rescue those families and I urge my Senate colleagues to hold a vote on it immediately. Americans are counting on us."
