Quigley Statement on FEC Ruling on Foreign Contributions

November 2, 2021

Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05), Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government and a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, released the following statement in response to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) ruling determining that foreign nationals may donate to U.S. ballot initiative campaigns:

"In every role I've held as a member of Congress, I have dedicated myself to safeguarding the security and sanctity of our nation's elections. For years now, we have all seen firsthand the dire consequences of foreign interference in our elections. I believe this ruling by the FEC reveals a significant flaw in current federal election finance law, which could lead to hostile nations further influencing our democratic process if left unaddressed.

"Congress must immediately take corrective action to explicitly ban foreign influence in campaigns, ballot initiatives, and elections of any kind."
