Quigley Statement on Delegation Trip to Rome in Support of Archbishop Cupich

November 17, 2016

CHICAGO — Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) released the following statement in advance of his trip to Rome with Mayor Emanuel and other city leaders to support Archbishop Blase Cupich as he is elevated to Cardinal in the Catholic Church:

"It is an honor to join this delegation in Rome for what will be a historic and celebratory moment not just for Archbishop Cupich, but for the entire City of Chicago. Regardless of faith or denomination, Archbishop Cupich's example of service and solicitude inspire us to be better stewards of this earth and all those who inhabit it. I thank him for his unrelenting efforts to promote tolerance, defend equality, and stand up for the most vulnerable in our society.

"During a time when our nation is deeply divided, I reflect on Pope Francis' historic address to Congress last year, where he discussed our moral obligation to rise above politics and party. From economic inequality and social justice to climate change and immigration, we must continue our work to find bipartisan solutions to the challenges we face. By working together we can ensure America remains a beacon of freedom, hope and opportunity for all who seek it."
