Quigley Statement on Ceasefire Agreement in Israel-Gaza War
Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) released the following statement on the ceasefire and hostage release agreement reached by Israel and Hamas:
“After 15 months of war, I am grateful that Israel and Hamas have reached a ceasefire agreement. On October 7th, 2023, Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people and capturing 250 more as hostages. For the families of the nearly 100 remaining hostages held in Gaza, this deal brings an end to 15 months of agony. Some will be reunited with their loved ones, and others will hopefully find comfort in the ability to lay their loved ones to rest. For the Palestinian civilians of Gaza, this ceasefire will mean a reprieve from 15 months of unimaginable devastation. Nearly 47,000 Palestinians have been killed since the war began, with the majority of those killed being women and children. 90 percent of Gaza’s population is internally displaced, 92 percent of homes have been destroyed or damaged, and the threat of widespread famine looms.
“While the framework for this deal was developed under President Biden, it will be up to the next administration to ensure its fulfillment. I implore the incoming administration to ensure both parties fully abide by the terms of the agreement and ensure fighting does not resume following the initial phase. The incoming Administration has an opportunity to make history by helping the Israelis and Palestinians achieve a lasting peace and two-state solution. Let’s not squander this historic opportunity.”
