Quigley Statement on Biden State of the Union Address
Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) released the following statement in response to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address:
“Tonight, President Biden reminded the nation and the world that he is a president for all. Since day 1, the President has worked tirelessly to reverse the damage to our democracy committed by Donald Trump. He has sought to bring the American people together, regardless of ideology or party. I am confident that under his leadership, democracy and freedom will always be shielded from the poison of extremism and authoritarian governance. Like him, I feel strongly that decisive, thoughtful, bipartisan policymaking is the best path forward for our nation and for our allies.
“Rightfully so, the President touted his unprecedented economic success. From record levels of unemployment and more jobs created in three years than any of his predecessors, the President has delivered for the middle class. Despite the numerous accomplishments, President Biden recognizes that not every American has felt the strength of our rebounded economy. Therefore, I am supportive of his mission to further deliver tax cuts for families with children and working Americans, invest in America, and reduce deficits.
“I was particularly glad to hear President Biden focus on the urgent need to safeguard reproductive freedom. At a time when politicians feel emboldened to tell women not just when to have a child, but how to have a child – the President made clear where he stands. I stand with him in the fight for people’s freedom to control their own bodies, lives and futures. Ultimately, it is imperative that Congress codify access to abortion, IVF and birth control.
“As the Co-Chair of Ukraine Caucus, I was reassured by President Biden’s message on supporting democracy in Ukraine. The President understands what is at stake in the war against Vladimir Putin. Allowing Putin to win will inevitably destabilize democracy in Eastern Europe and around the world. We must not let this be the case, for history will not be kind to our failure. I urge my colleagues across the aisle to appeal to the better angels of their nature and commit to additional support for Ukraine. Together with the President, I know Congress can help Ukraine win this war.”
