Quigley, Renacci and Loebsack Call on “Super Committee” Co-Chairs to Proactively Implement Transparency Measures

September 13, 2011

Washington, D.C. -- Congressmen Mike Quigley (IL-05), Jim Renacci (OH-16) and Dave Loebsack (IA-02) today called on Rep. Jeb Hensarling (TX-05) and Sen. Patty Murray (WA), the Co-Chairs of the Joint Committee on Deficit Reduction, to proactively implement comprehensive transparency measures for the committee, which is tasked with reducing the deficit by at least $1.2 trillion. These measures will ensure the committee's process and final product is free from the question of undue influence and special interest intervention. The bipartisan group of Representatives sent a letter to call for the adoption of the six requirements that are detailed in the Deficit Committee Transparency Act, which they introduced last week.

"We applaud the proposals adopted during the committee's first meeting last week and believe they are a positive step toward ensuring confidence in the committee's proceedings. Unfortunately, many of them fall short of the expectations of transparency we believe the American people are looking for from the committee," Congressmen Quigley wrote. "With the short timeframe you have to develop a bipartisan proposal to reduce the deficit by at least $1.2 trillion, it is more important than ever that a high level of transparency be required of the committee's and staff's meetings, campaign contributions and interactions. The American people deserve no less."
