Quigley Praises HUD Reversal of Trump-era LGBTQ Discrimination

Apr 22, 2021
Press Release

Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) , a Vice-Chair of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus and a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, released a statement after Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Marcia Fudge announced that HUD is withdrawing the previous administration’s proposed rule that would have weakened the Equal Access Rule. Since 2017, when HUD under former Secretary Ben Carson removed LGBTQ nondiscrimination guidance from the Department’s website, Quigley has fought against efforts to discriminate against trans Americans seeking emergency housing. Quigley repeatedly and passionately challenged Carson’s transphobic policies during Committee hearings and led letters and policy efforts to prevent anti-trans discrimination.

HUD’s announcement follows an exchange between Quigley and Fudge yesterday when they discussed the importance of equal access to housing for LGBTQ Americans.

Quigley’s reaction to today’s announcement is below:

“After four long years of fighting the previous administration’s homophobic and transphobic policies, I am incredibly relieved that under President Biden, HUD has moved quickly to ensure that LGBTQ Americans enjoy the same protections as straight and cis individuals. Housing is a human right and no one should face discrimination based on who they love or how they identify. It is incredibly refreshing to know that Secretary Fudge and President Biden share this core belief.

“This announcement is due in no small part to the dedication and fearlessness of the activists who repeatedly challenged the Trump administration’s bigoted policies. I am incredibly grateful for their relentlessness and I hope to continue working together in the coming months to bring an end to the GOP’s newest line of attacks against trans youth.”
