Quigley Named to Powerful Appropriations Committee

January 4, 2013

Committee approves spending for nearly all federal programs

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) was appointed by the Democratic Caucus to the powerful House Committee on Appropriations, which is responsible for approving the federal government's annual spending levels for nearly all federal programs. Rep. Quigley will be the only member from Illinois to serve on the committee in the 113th Congress.

"This new role is an incredible opportunity to advocate for important projects that encourage economic development in the Chicago area," said Quigley. "As the Appropriations Committee focuses on deficit reduction, creating American jobs and strengthening our economy, I am humbled to have the privilege of ensuring that taxpayer dollars are spent responsibly."

"Congressman Quigley will bring the values of his district, the aspirations of his constituents, and a strong commitment to fiscal responsibility and job creation to his work on the Appropriations Committee," Leader Nancy Pelosi said. "Ever since coming to Congress, he has proven himself a dedicated fighter for middle class families in Chicago and across the country, and he will contribute that same energy, passion, and perseverance to the task of determining where and how we invest public funds to strengthen our economy."

Since arriving to Congress in 2009, Quigley has quickly taken on several key leadership roles, most recently being elected Regional Whip by colleagues in the Democratic Caucus. He currently is the Ranking Member for the Oversight and Government Reform Committee's Subcommittee on TARP, Financial Services, and Bailouts of Public and Private Programs and also serves on the House Judiciary Committee.

Guided by principles of the Simpson-Bowles budget alternative, Rep. Quigley has led a push for a "3B Budget Plan" that is bipartisan, achieves big deficit reduction, and balances spending cuts with tax reform. He is the author of Reinventing Government: The Federal Budget, a report which offers 60 recommendations to save $2 trillion over the next 10 years, and co-founder of the Transparency Caucus, which seeks to enact legislation that will bring openness and accessibility to the federal government.
