Quigley Congratulates Guerin Student for Winning Congressional Art Contest
Art will hang in U.S. Capitol, student will fly to Washington for awards ceremony this summer
CHICAGO -- Today, Congressman Mike Quigley (D-IL) announced Agatha Waranka from Guerin College Preparatory High School as the winner of the 5th District of Illinois' 2010 Congressional Art Competition. Her still life of pears resting on the American flag will hang in the United States Capitol for the next year.
"It is inspiring to see the rich artistic talent of young people on display in this competition," said Quigley. "I congratulate Agatha on her stunning painting that will now represent Illinois' 5th District to people from around the world visiting our nation's Capitol."

Alexandra Paul, also from Guerin, was the second place winner and Mather High School's Todd Hamamoto won third prize. Paul's photo will be displayed in Quigley's Washington, D.C. office and Hamamoto's will be hung in Quigley's Chicago office.
Quigley attended the announcement ceremony on May 3rd at the 17th District Police Station on Chicago's Northwest side. The Congressional Art Competition was open to all high school students in the 5th District.
Southwest Airlines will fly Waranka, as well as all other winners, to Washington, D.C. for a ceremony this summer. The annual competition features art from each of the 435 congressional districts across the country.
