Quigley Co-Sponsors Government by the People Act

February 5, 2014

WASHINGTON – Today, Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) joined a bipartisan coalition of House members to introduce H.R. 20, the Government by the People Act, which would reform campaign finance laws to reduce the influence of big money in politics. Rep. Quigley is an original co-sponsor of the legislation.

“As long as the voices of everyday Americans are drowned out by big money and special interests, the public’s trust in government will continue to crumble. We need a government that is focused on answering to the people,” said Rep. Quigley.

The Government by the People Act would provide a refundable $25 My Voice Tax Credit to encourage greater political participation from small donors. It establishes a Freedom From Influence Matching Fund to ensure that the voices of small donors are as powerful as those of big donors. The legislation also provides a response to the Citizens United decision by giving candidates the opportunity to earn additional resources in the final stretch of a campaign, so that candidates relying on small donor fundraising remain competitive against candidates funded by SuperPACs and special interests.

Rep. Quigley has been committed to good government reform throughout his time in Congress. He is co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional Transparency Caucus, which seeks to enact legislation that will bring openness and accessibility to the federal government.
