Quigley Appointed to Serve on Influential Intel Committee
WASHINGTON – Today, Rep. Mike Quigley (IL-05) was appointed by Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi to serve on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI). The committee oversees the activities of the entire Intelligence Community. Rep. Quigley released this statement on his new committee assignment:
“I am honored to be appointed by Leader Pelosi to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, which plays such a crucial role in preserving the safety and national security of the United States. Given the complex security challenges facing our nation, from terrorism to cyber security, the work of the committee is more important now than ever. I believe the government has both the capability and responsibility to strike the proper balance between protecting our nation’s security and protecting the civil liberties of its citizens. I am humbled by the trust placed in me by my caucus to serve as a watchdog over our intelligence agencies.
“Representing Chicago, one of the nation’s largest cities and a major hub for travel and commerce, I bring to the committee a unique understanding of the national security challenges we face. But here in DC or back home in Chicago, people know me for the work I’ve done to make government more open and accountable. Although matters before the committee are often classified, I’ll bring reformed-minded governing to overseeing our intelligence agencies.”
Announcing members of the House Intel Committee, Leader Pelosi released this statement: “Congressman Quigley has worked diligently to ensure a better, safer, stronger future for our children, and he will be a strong new voice on the Intelligence Committee in this Congress.”
Since his arrival in Congress, Quigley has quickly moved up the ranks, assuming prominent leadership positions that have helped to benefit Chicago and his constituents back home. Most recently he was appointed Senior Whip and re-elected Regional Whip by colleagues in the Democratic Caucus. Last Congress, he was appointed to the powerful House Committee on Appropriations, where he currently serves on the Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development and the Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government. As the only Illinois member of the committee, Quigley has oversight over the spending of the entire federal government, where he has focused on increasing investments in important areas like transportation infrastructure and public safety and bringing much needed federal funding back to his city and state.
Serving previously on the House Judiciary Committee, Quigley continues to build a record as an advocate for public safety and national security issues, a guardian of civil liberties, and a champion of government transparency and accountability. He is the co-founder of the Congressional Transparency Caucus, which seeks to enact legislation that will bring openness and accessibility to the federal government.
